Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum of Dubai has just made an incredibly charitable gesture by donating over $350,000 worth of emergency supplies to Haiti in the wake of Hurricane Matthew. The poorest country in the Western hemisphere had just been recovering from a 2010 earthquake, when the hurricane hit.

The funds, which were flown over in his own private jet, are being used to restore the country and help its civilians, after a mass cholera outbreak, which has killed over 10,000 people to date. Approximately 300,000 Haitians have been forced to seek temporary shelter since the hurricane, after 1,000 were found dead when the storm hit the country.

The Sheikh’s wife, HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, has made it her personal duty to oversee the relief mission and has travelled to Haiti to distribute supplies, which include mosquito nets, medical supplies and water purifiers.

The Princess has been documenting her journey and experiences on Instagram. These images, which she captured on her mobile, show the horrors of the chaos and destruction left by the category five hurricane.

They asked me to say that they were very proud to see an Arab country send such a huge airlift to Haiti, where they are serving.

The United Nations has estimated that 1.4 million people in Haiti require urgent assistance and have put out an appeal for $120 million. It is hoped that the generous donations made by Dubai’s Emir will encourage further high profile figures to donate to the cause.
