Japan has come up with an idea to get tourists into its disaster struck areas. They will be using Pokémon Go. Officials out of each of the areas that have been affected by disasters like tsunamis and earthquakes are discussing ways in which this can be done. Substantial amounts of money have been set aside for the promotion of the game and proposals have been made to make parts of the game Japan-exclusive for a set period of time.

A nuclear disaster that was caused by an earthquake back in 2011 heavily affected Fukushima. There are four regions that are proposing the use of Pokémon Go in the attraction of tourists. The officials from Tohoku’s Fukushima, Iwate, Miyagi and the Kumamoto region on Kyushu have proposed solutions regarding the methods in which the game can be used to increase the tourism to the areas.

The ideas they came up with include the addition of extra Pokéstops and Gyms which are places in the game and in the real world that have to be visited in order to be part of the game. Pokémon Go is played out in the real world where the physical person has to go to a physical place in order to move their avatar there in the game.

Another idea is to make certain Pokémon available specifically in the disaster areas. 30 million yen have been put aside to be used in funding the disaster affected areas and half of that will be used for the promotion of local Pokéstops. Players collect items that aid in their game from these stops. Ads on TV and pamphlets are planned for the campaign while another 10 million yen will be used to host Pokémon Go events that will be held in the four areas that they have discussed. The remaining 5 million yen will be paid to Niantic, the creator of the game for the purpose of system improvement.

Officials from Miyagi also sent a suggestion to Niantic asking for exclusive characters to be available in their area for a limited period of time. The characters they have in mind are Kangaskhan, Mr. Mime, Tauros and Farfetch’d. According to Eurogamer they can only be found in some regions in the world and Miyagi is hoping to become one of these regions. If these Pokémon are made available in the disaster struck areas they are sure to attract tourists in huge numbers.
