Welcome to the John Travolta Gay Scandal 2014! That’s right, the Grease and Hairspray star is in the news fighting back against rumors that he’s a closeted homosexual — again.
Women’s Day Australia notes that Gotterba originally revealed details of the alleged affair to American media back in 2012. However, Gotterba’s actions were halted due to a confidentiality agreement. Now Gotterba has finally been granted right to argue in court that he’s not bound by that agreement, meaning that if he wins he can talk about the details all he wants. Many in the media expect that he will publish a book about the affair.
Here’s how the New York Daily News broke the story:
In a National Enquirer story labeled “ridiculous” by Travolta’s camp, pilot Doug Gotterba said he first met the “Grease” star in February 1981 when he interviewed for a pilot job – and by September they were lovers.
“I know the date (the affair began) because I still have the log book and records,” Gotterba, 62, told the Enquirer.
He said they flew to Monterey, Calif., together and shared a “fantastic” bottle of merlot wine over dinner at the Highlands resort in Carmel.
“I got the sense I was being courted,” Gotterba said. “As we walked from the restaurant back to the room, John suddenly said, “Hey, would you like a massage?’”
Gotterba said he’d expected the invitation, and the massage quickly led to sex.
“John was gentle but very passionate. The next day he told me with a big smile on his face, ‘I really enjoyed last night,’” Gotterba told the Enquirer.
In the subsequent years, Travolta would reportedly “whisk” Gotterba to exotic locations such as Hawaii and Kenya. “Sometimes he would bring women along as beards, but he would ask me to join him in his suite and we’d spend the nights together. It was our little secret,” he says. “There was no chemistry between [John and Brooke]. They’d smile for the cameras and everyone assumed they were a couple.”
Gotterba says he last saw Travolta in 1992, after he was married to Kelly Preston. That was when the actor made a startling revelation.
“They’d just gotten back from the Church of Scientology’s Celebrity Center in Hollywood when I arrived and John asked me to go with him for a walk on the beach. We were making small talk when suddenly, I blurted out, ‘So, John, tell me. Now that you’re married, do you still prefer men – or women?’ He looked me straight in the eye and said, ‘Well, Doug, I still prefer men!’ I said, ‘okay.’ And that’s the last time we saw each other.”
This isn’t the first time that gay rumors have surrounded Travolta; two male massage therapists filed lawsuits against Travolta, claiming he made unwanted sexual advances toward them a few years ago.
