The most annoying song in the world since Gangnam Style has just made US chart history for being the shortest song to appear in the billboard charts.

At just 45 seconds long, the Pen Pineapple Apple Pen (abbreviated to PPAP) song currently sits at number 77 in this week’s Billboard hot 100.

The song by Japanese singer-songwriter Piko-Taro went viral after Justin Bieber called it his ‘favourite thing on the internet’.

In case you haven’t seen it yet, the video basically consists of Piko-Taro singing about pens, pineapples and apples while bopping to a retro beat.

With over 200 million views since it was posted on YouTube in August, it’s set to be a Christmas no. 1 chart topper!

Explaining the motivation behind writing the song, Piko-Taro states:

‘The message of Pen Pineapple Apple Pen is that apples and pineapples can be united if we stick a pen in them, and that we are all riding in one spaceship called earth.

‘All I’m trying to do is to write tunes that will put a smile on people’s faces and are easy to remember.’ Fair enough.
