Ridiculous Runway Fashions

Do you ever watch Project Runway, glass of wine in hand, and during the episode’s final fashion show think to yourself, God, that’s awful! Who would wear that?

Only to then feel stunned and stupid when that contestant wins the week’s challenge?

You’re not alone, and it’s the same thought that usually runs through people’s minds when they see shots from various Fashion Weeks. The thing to keep in mind is that not all fashion shows look like this. Many designers feature flattering, sexy, and incredibly appealing works.

But that doesn’t make for great news clips.

Instead, news and entertainment shows often focus on the insane, absolutely outrageous, entirely unwearable and completely impractical clothes. Why did those designers make these crazy creations? Probably because this is an avant-garde show, and those outfits aren’t supposed to be worn in everyday life.

“Avant-garde” is a French term used in English to refer to people or works that are experimental or innovative. It represents a pushing of the boundaries, of what is accepted as the norm or the status quo. Fashion designers alternatively define this style as sophisticated, mysterious, intimidating, intriguing, striking. It’s meant to be spoken about because it’s half art, half fashion. So when we see these concept pieces, they’re meant to inspire, shock, and evoke an attitude–not be something you toss on before picking up milk at WalMart.

That all sounds VERY sophisticated, right? And if you were sitting at a real Fashion Week show, sipping champagne and creating thoughtful observations alongside incredibly smart fashionistas, you might not think them so odd. That said, when we saw this stunning article on Mandatory.com, we wondered if the fashions were meant to be avant-garde or something the designers expected someone to actually wear out. The article features 23 images that may just leave your eyes bleeding. Here are some of our favorites.

As the article noted, “She’s a little two-faced.”
