Texas Chemistry Teacher Allegedly Made Meth, Date Rape Drugs

A Texas high school chemistry teacher and her husband were arrested Friday on drug charges. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department said the teacher had recipes for making date rape drugs in her backpack when she was taken into custody.

Haivan Bui, 29, was arrested at Oak Ridge High School, where she’s taught chemistry since last year. Police raided Bui’s home earlier in the day, when police apprehended her 33-year-old husband Chris Alan Hartwell, an ex-felon. The search also turned up methamphetamine, a load shotgun, more drug-making recipes and gamma-hydroxybutyrate, a compound used in manufacturing date rape drugs.

Huffington Post reports police charged Bui with intent to deliver or manufacture a controlled substance and Hartwell with possession of a controlled substance and felon in possession of a firearm.

There is so far no evidence of illegal activity at school. Students described Bui as a good teacher, and the couple’s neighbors were similarly surprised.

“Maybe they’re trying to be the new Breaking Bad,” neighbor Phyllis Hannon told KPRC. “He was a chemistry teacher on the show, too.”

The sheriff’s office is still investigating the case. Bui is being held on $50,000 bond.
