During the 19th and early 20 century, occultism swept across America and Europe. This movement was centered on the belief that life continues after death, and that spirits or entities could be communicated with on another frequency via mediums.
It was a time when many folks came forward claiming they had some sort of psychokinetic powers, either through performance art or spirit photography.
Spirit writing (written words that allegedly arose from a subconscious, spiritual or supernatural source), levitation and seances (meetings where people would try to contact the dead), were commonplace, and mesmerized the imagination of the public.
During seances, mediums would often conjure up an ectoplasm, which is a mystical material that would flow out of an opening on their body. This paranormal substance took various shapes and is said to have made ghosts or spirits materialize.
