Technically considered a parody of B-movie, science fiction and horror films of the late 1940s through early 1970s, fans think of this as an amazing rock musical best enjoyed in a packed movie house with umbrellas, water guns, bags of rice, slices of toast, and a great sense of humor. It follows the story of Brad and Janet, two young, ordinary American youths who get engaged, have their car break down on the road, and then stumble upon a castle. There they meet the butler Riff Raff, his sister Magenta, a groupie named Columbia, and of course Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a mad scientist who’s also a sweet transvestite from Transsexual Transylvania.
It introduced the world to Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick, and has been playing in movie theaters ever since its premiere, making it the longest-running theatrical release in film history.
Is there anything more fun than the theme song to this 1984 movie? We think not. That alone is enough reason to add this film to the list, but if you aren’t quite sold, here’s a short description: The film follows three odd-ball scientists who set up shop as a ghost removal service and are called on to save New York City when evil spirits threaten its safety.
Who you gonna call? GHOSTBUSTERS!! We couldn’t help ourselves.
Little Shop of Horrors (1986)
If you haven’t yet seen this movie, you can’t call yourself a true Broadway fan. Set up originally as a musical, it became a science fiction horror film with some comedy thrown in to boot. The story centers on a nerdy florist shop employee named Seymour who ends up growing a vicious, raunchy plant that feeds on human blood. He names it Audrey 2, after a fellow employee named Audrey who he has a major crush on. Soon, Audrey 2 takes on a life of its own, and the shop keeper quickly becomes a slave to the plant’s never-ending appetite for blood.
Starring some great comedic actors like Steve Martin and Rick Moranis, it’s a spell-binding tale that engrosses you with musical numbers and a love story. You won’t be able to keep the tunes out of your head!
