The Japanese midwife was also known as Oni-Sanba, or, Demon Midwife. She lived up to the name — she was responsible for an estimated 103 deaths of infants.

During Japan’s simultaneous baby boom and economic downturn, the midwife took it upon herself to solve the crisis. With the birth rate increasing dramatically and couples worrying over a lack of money and support for their child, she decided that letting the babies die was better than having them suffer through life later on.
