A cellphone video from earlier this week has gone viral, after it revealed the questionable actions of five San Francisco police officers. The incident apparently happened earlier in the month, but has recently started making the rounds on the Internet.
Footage shows five cops holding down a 42-year-old black man who only has one leg—in fact he relies on crutches and a prosthetic leg to walk. The shocking clip, filmed by a passerby, shows officers pinning the man to the ground—one cop is even kneeling on the man’s artificial leg.
During the struggle the man’s pants start to fall down, revealing his backside to the entire crowd gathered to witness the spectacle.
The incident was filmed by Chaédria LaBouvier and subsequently posted to YouTUBe. LaBouvier calls the incident one of racial profiling, and said it wasn’t ever made clear why the man was being detained in the first place.
The Huffington Post reports that the police were responding to a 911 call about a man “waving sticks.” Conflicting statements from witnesses and the San Francisco Police Department cannot agree whether the sticks were actually his crutches.
A spokesperson from the police department said that the man bit at and kicked officers, and was transported to the hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
Witnesses and viewers of the viral footage are outraged that so many officers used force in dealing with a man with disabilities.
