Following last week’s horrifying news of a 9-year-old Arizona girl accidentally shooting and killing her gun instructor with an Uzi, a similarly horrifying story has emerged of a 7-year-old California boy who shot himself in the chest after firing a rifle on his family’s homemade shooting range.
According to reports, the boy involved was firing a single-shot, .22 bolt action youth rifle under his father’s supervision, when he suddenly cried out and clutched his chest. That’s when the father noticed a small hole in his shirt, followed by blood.
The youngster was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center from a local fire station. According to reports the timing may have been just right as he is expected to survive.
Following investigation, the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department deputies told KCRA “they suspected the bullet richocheted off something, and it looks like the boy was hit by fragments. They do not think anyone was aiming guns at each other, or suspect any foul play” adding that “the boy appeared properly supervised and the shooting range complied with safety standards.”
Lt. Tim Becker is describing the unfortunate incident as purely an accident.
