8-Year-Old Saves 6 From Trailer Fire, Dies Trying to Save 7th

Tyler Doohan, and 8-year-old New York boy, is being remembered as a hero after saving six people in a trailer fire and dying while trying to save the remaining two people still inside.

The fourth-grader was staying over at his grandfather’s trailer in Rochester on his day off from school, when a fire broke out in the trailer that at the time was housing nine occupants, according to a USA Today news report.

The fire is believed to have been caused from an electrical problem at the front of the trailer and firefighters aren’t sure if a working fire alarm or smoke detector was available when the fire started at about 4:45am. But when Tyler realized what was going on he woke up six people and saved their lives, including two children aged 4 and 6.

When he went back in to save his grandfather and uncle, who is disabled and uses a wheelchair and crutches, the brave young hero succumbed to the fire and died along with the two older relatives.

Penfield Fire Chief Chris Ebmeyer said “The roof had collapsed on the front half of the trailer and one of the individuals was found there, probably on a couch, but there was nothing left to even see if it was furniture. In the rear, there was a bedroom and the other deceased male was found in a bed. The child was a few feet way.”

The community has been rocked by the tragic news, as has the school district where Tyler was enrolled at the time of his deat.

Interim Superintendent Richard Stutzman Jr from the district put out this statement following the horrific incident:

“With great sadness, the East Rochester School District confirms one of the three victims of an early-morning fire in Penfield was a fourth-grade boy at our school. It is extremely important to remember that according to emergency personnel, (Tyler) was the person who discovered the fire and tried to wake the eight other people in the residence at the time. In bravely and selflessly giving his own life, he was able to save the lives of six others — and he is truly a hero.”
