A St. Louis-area woman accidentally shot herself in the head with a gun bought in preparation for Ferguson-related unrest, according to WGNTV. The shot was fatal.

The incident occurred Friday night in downtown St. Louis, Missouri near Ferguson — the site of recent rioting related to the shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown — near an area dominated by vacant lots surrounding a nearby football stadium.

Becca Campbell, 26, was in the passenger seat of a car driven by her 33-year-old boyfriend when they were involved in an auto accident. The unidentified boyfriend told police they had just bought a gun for protection relating to the Ferguson protests.

The boyfriend told police that, while they were driving on Friday, Campbell waved the gun in the air and jokingly said they were ready for Ferguson. The boyfriend ducked out of the way of the gun. The vehicle then swerved into another car, causing the gun to go off.

A bullet struck Campbell in the head. She was rushed to the hospital but died en route. Police are continuing the investigation to ensure that the boyfriend’s story holds up.
