New Umbrella Will Protect You From the Rain Using Nothing but Air

In the not so far off future, you’ll be able to protect yourself from the pouring rain in a very different way than you’re used to.

A Kickstarter project is aiming to bring you a motorized umbrella powered by air. It’s called the Air Umbrella and it’s a rod-shaped device with a motor, rechargeable lithium battery and a fan blade. It works by taking the air below the blade and forcing it out in such a way that the falling rain gets redirected to go around you, keeping you dry.

It comes in three models, which range from 12 inches of size with 15 minutes of battery life to 32 inches with 30 minutes of battery life.

The device is still a while away from actually making it to market, but the funding for the project closes on Oct 24, with preorders starting shortly after. It will cost about $118 to buy with shipping beginning before December 2015.
