Famed children’s book author Judy Blume, who wrote coming of age books for adolescent girls like, Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret, revealed on her blog today that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in June of this year.
The 74-year old underwent a biopsy on June 12th that detected the cancer. Blume chose to undergo a mastectomy in July. Luckily, she caught the invasive ductile carcinoma cancer very early and is anticipating a smooth recovery.
Blume has been recovering at her home in New York City with her husband George, but she tweeted to her excited followers earlier today that she is on Martha’s Vineyard for a screening of her film Tiger Eyes. She’ll also be attending a Q&A on it this Saturday night.
Before her breast cancer diagnosis, Blume took a stand when the breast cancer charity Susan G. Komen for the Cure decided to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood. She sided with the Komen foundation’s decision and showed her distress when the decision to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood was reversed.
Tweeting on February 1st of this year, “Susan Komen would not give in to bullies or to fear. Too bad the foundation bearing her name did.”
We at FTK wish Judy a smooth and speedy recovery!
