Maybe we’ve been living under a rock, but we had no idea that the Great Blue Heron was capable of swallowing a gopher whole, especially a squirming, live one!
These birds are most common in Northern Virginia along the edges of lakes, marshes and rivers, hunting all kinds of fish, as well as lizards, frogs and dragonflies. It is also known to feed on mice and other small rodents, such as this poor little gopher in its large yellow bill.
A Blue Heron can grow up to four feet tall, with a wingspan of about six feet.
