It’s a story that could have ended in tragedy: A young boy jumps out of moving vehicle in order to escape the man who stole the car he was in.
Peyton Tran’s mother, Hahn Tran, had left her car running while she ran up to her relative’s house to say goodbye. According to WGNTV, she thought her children were safe — they were playing near the car — but unbeknownst to Mrs. Tran and her relatives, Peyton had decided to climb inside.
“I load up my car, I turn around, try to say goodbye to my mother-in-law and tell all the other kids to get into the car to leave to go home — and out of nowhere, that guy just took off in the car,” Mrs. Tran said. “And my sister-in-law was like, ‘The car. The car.’
“And I was like, ‘Oh my God, the baby is in the car. The baby is in the car.'”
This account contradicts a report from the Associated Press, which reported, “The mom had put him in a car seat and gone back inside to say goodbye when the man struck.”
In either case, a strange man man jumped into the running car and sped off down the street. When Peyton realized the person driving wasn’t his mother, he took action by opening up the car door and jumping from the speeding vehicle. He landed in the street, and police say he suffered only minor injuries — mostly cuts and scrapes to his legs.
“I am so very proud of him and we are so blessed of how smart he is,” Mrs. Tran said. “You’ve got to be really proud of him. I am. We talked about it. I mean, even as (an) adult, that’s probably not a reaction we would have in that kind of moment.”
Police found the car a short while later, but are still looking for the carjacker.
