Brandi Lee Weaver-Gates, a 23-year-old beauty queen from Pennsylvania, was arrested and is now facing charges for theft by deception and receiving stolen property. The reigning Miss Pennsylvania U.S. International is accused of faking her cancer diagnoses and using it to raise thousands of dollars from donors.
Pennsylvania Police were given an anonymous tip and began to investigate her case. She lied and said she had been suffering from chronic lymphocytic leukemia since March 2013. Over the course of two years, Weaver-Gates tricked her family and friends by shaving her head and asking to be driven to a hospital in Baltimore to receive treatment.
She also set up fundraising events for herself. One specific event she held this past April, “Bingo for Brandi,” raised approximately $14,000.
Through investigation, authorities found out that Weaver-Gates has never been treated for cancer.
According to Butler’s Beauties, a partner of Miss Pennsylvania U.S. International, her beauty queen title will be removed. When she gets out of jail, they will take immediate action and retrieve her sash and crown.
They said in a statement:
“Butler’s Beauties believes that with a crown and sash you can accomplish many great things as a role model, spokesmodel and community leader as a beauty pageant queen, When you deceive the public and take people’s money that is under the pretense of fraud, we will not tolerate those actions.”
She was arrested on Tuesday and will stay at the Centre County Correctional Facility until she pays her $150,000 bond.
