A bride from Northern India walked out of her own wedding ceremony because the groom couldn’t solve a simple math problem, The Guardian reported. The bride reportedly asked a simple addition problem, but the groom got the answer totally wrong—so she walked out, and local police were called to the scene.
She allegedly asked him to solve “15 + 6,” and he answered “17.”
According to reports, the groom’s family tried to save the wedding and convince the bride to go through with the union. She refused.
The bride and her family were furious because they believe the groom lied about his level of education.
“The groom’s family kept us in the dark about his poor education,” said the bride’s father. “Even a first grader can answer this.”
After the bride refused to continue with the ceremony, police were called to mediate between the families as they returned wedding gifts that had already been exchanged.
One police official told BBC Hindi that the wedding had been arranged by the bride’s father, Mohar Singh.
The bride and groom had not known each other long before the arranged ceremony, but when she realized he was illiterate she refused to proceed.
