Caddisfly larvae are some of the most fascinating creatures on the planet. One of the most amazing characteristics of the caddisfly is their ability to create highly intricate and ornate protective cases with whatever they can find; be it leaves, pebbles or fish bone.
Since the early 1980’s, a French artist has been using caddisfly larvae to construct some otherworldly creations. After removing them from their natural habitat, such as rivers, streams, ponds and even temporary waters, Hubert Duprat gave them gems, gold, turquoise and pearls to see what kind of magic they could craft.
Using the silk that they excrete from their salivary glands, the caddisfly larvae built the most mind-blowing cocoons you’ve ever seen! They are fancier than any creation a world-class jeweler could manufacture.
