Hidden beneath Mount Erebus, the only active volcano in Antarctica, lies a breathtaking sight that only a few people have ever seen in person.
A network of complex caves underneath the mountain house one-of-a-kind ice formations that exist only in that location and nowhere else on the planet.
Though not every aspect of these formations is clearly understood, it is believed that the heat from the volcano melts the icy walls inside the cave and the moisture that’s released freezes in the air and takes on the stunning shapes.
According to Aplus, scientists believe there’s a small possibility that the unusual ice crystals are formed by a bacteria known to live in extreme environments.
Whatever the case may be, one thing is sure: These rare beauties are a sight to behold. Check them out for yourself above.
