Celebrate Mexican Independence Day with Tequila

Everyone is familiar with the festivities that go hand-in-hand with Cinco de Mayo, but what about the real Mexican holiday–Mexican Independence Day?

Celebrated on September 15 or September 16 (back in 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo rallied the troops with his church bells at midnight between those two days), Mexicans living in the US gather to celebrate their country’s independence from Spain, also known as El Grito de Dolores.

In Mexico, about half a million people gathered in el Zócalo, a public plaza, to celebrate, sing the national anthem and remember this day.

To honor those who fought in the war, major cities across the country such as New York and Las Vegas are hosting special events to celebrate the occasion. If you weren’t fortunate enough to make it out to one of these events, not to worry. Hispanic Heritage Month has just begun! From September 15 through October 15, you can pay tribute to the many Hispanic-Americans who have influenced and enriched our nation.

Hornitos and Sauza Tequila have even created some fantastic recipes to help you get your fiesta on in the comfort of your own home.

Whether you just need an excuse to sit back and enjoy a drink or plan on hosting a Mexican themed dinner party, America’s first indigenous spirit–native to Mexico–is sure to liven things up.
