Celebrate Mexican Independence Day with Tequila

Everyone is familiar with the festivities that go hand-in-hand with Cinco de Mayo, but what about the real Mexican holiday–Mexican Independence Day?

Celebrated on September 15 or September 16 (back in 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo rallied the troops with his church bells at midnight between those two days), Mexicans living in the US gather to celebrate their country’s independence from Spain, also known as El Grito de Dolores.

In Mexico, about half a million people gathered in el Zócalo, a public plaza, to celebrate, sing the national anthem and remember this day.

To honor those who fought in the war, major cities across the country such as New York and Las Vegas are hosting special events to celebrate the occasion. If you weren’t fortunate enough to make it out to one of these events, not to worry. Hispanic Heritage Month has just begun! From September 15 through October 15, you can pay tribute to the many Hispanic-Americans who have influenced and enriched our nation.

Hornitos® La Libertad


  • 1 1⁄2 parts Hornitos® Plata Tequila
  • 3⁄4 part lime juice
  • 3⁄4 part pineapple juice
  • 1⁄4 part Agave
  • Pinch of cilantro leaves

How to Make It

  1. Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice
  2. Shake
  3. Strain into a whiskey tumbler glass
  4. Enjoy!


Hornitos® El Padre


How to Make It

  1. Rim shot glass with salt and smoked paprika
  2. Mix chilled lemonade, chilled Hornitos® Plata and hot sauce in mixing glass
  3. Pour into shot glass


Sauza® Sparkling Mexican Madras


How to Make It

  1. Build over ice in a Collins glass
  2. Garnish with a lime wheel on the rim


Sauza-Blue-SilverSauza® Bloody Maria

  • 1 1/2 parts Sauza® Blue Silver 100% Agave Tequila
  • 7 parts tomato juice
  • 3 grinds fresh black pepper
  • 1 squeeze of Siracha Chili Sauce
  • Lemon juice
  • Several dashes of Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 dash of celery salt
  • 1 dash of paprika
  • 1 dash of cumin

How to Make It

  1. In a shaker filled with ice, combine all ingredients.
  2. Shake well and pour into a tall glass over ice, with or without salt.
  3. Garnish with a lime and olive
