As the stereotype goes, men hate shopping with their girlfriends, but this story takes things to the extreme.
Tao Hsiao, 38, jumped to his death in the middle of a multistory shopping mall after his girlfriend demanded they go into another store.
The story happened at the Golden Eagle International Shopping Center in Xuzhou, Jiangsu, a province in east China. According to Chinese news site Hexun.com, closed-circuit television footage shows Hsiao escorting his girlfriend around the mall and carrying her many shopping bags along the way. Witnesses say that after five hours he’d had enough and demanded they go home. His girlfriend, however, wanted to hit one last shop where a shoe sale was taking place. That’s when things got out of control.
“He told her she already had enough shoes, more shoes than she could wear in a lifetime and it was pointless buying any more,” The Daily Mail reported. “She started shouting at him, accusing him of being a skinflint and of spoiling Christmas, it was a really heated argument.”
The two began shouting at one another until Hsiao threw the bags onto the floor and jumped over the balcony. He smashed into holiday decorations on the way down until he hit the ground seven floors below. Shoppers were startled by the noise and fled in panic, but miraculously no one else was hurt in the incident.
Medical services were called, but he was pronounced dead on the spot.
