Marcus Bradley is a delivery driver for a Lowe’s Home Improvement in Virgina, who just happens to be black. He has worked with the company for 11 years, and was left completely shocked when his manager took him off of a delivery, WTVR reported.
When Bradley asked why he was told it was the customer’s wish. Because he is black the customer didn’t want him at her house.
According to Bradley, he was already on his way to the delivery location when his manager called and told him to change plans.
He was told to bring the delivery back so that a white driver could be swapped in.
In a statement, Lowe’s confirmed that the manager who decided Bradley would be swapped out for a white delivery driver is no longer at the company, and that a full investigation into the incident would be carried out.
The statement read in part:
“Diversity and inclusion is a core value at Lowe’s. The situation brought to our attention was troubling and investigation was immediately undertaken. Under no circumstances should a discriminatory delivery request be honored as it is inconsistent with our diversity and inclusion core values and the request should have been refused. The investigation has concluded and the individuals involved are no longer with [the] company.”
As for Bradley, he said that he intends to continue working—out of necessity for a job—but that he hopes management puts more consideration into how they respond to such requests in the future.
A reporter who tracked down the customer for an interview asked why she’d made such a specific request.
Apparently her response was: “I got a right to have whatever I want and that’s it.”
When asked if she felt bad about her treatment, only said “no, I don’t feel bad about nothing.”
