Why Didn’t This Disappearing Car Door Ever Make the Production Line?

When we first stumbled across this video, we immediately began wondering why this concept never caught on in car culture. But then we realized that side impact would most definitely be an issue.

Removing the b-pillar to accommodate this inventionĀ just doesn’t seem safe or practical, as it would affect the overall structure of the vehicle.

However, it still looks really cool.

The only model we’ve ever seen employ anything similar to a disappearing car door is BMW’s Z1. The Z1 has an incredible door opening sequence.

When you push a button on the outside of the vehicle, the window and door neatly folds down into the sill. Only 8,000 of the model were ever made.

You can see the car in action below.
