Cancer has a way of creeping up on people when they least expect it. For artist and cancer survivor Alexsandro Palombo, it is also a muse.
The artists was inspired to spread awareness of breast cancer after losing his best friend to the disease. The series of famous cartoon characters with mastectomy scars demonstrates that no one is immune to cancer, not even Disney princesses.
Palombo hopes to use these beauty icons to inspire “hope, beauty, and courage,” for all cancer survivors. He was drawn to visual art four years ago when he developed a rare form of cancer himself. “Since then I decided to dedicate myself more strongly to social activism through art,” he told Buzzfeed.
“Every woman is beautiful, even after a mastectomy,” he says. “And every woman should know that.”
