A video with the simple title “Caleb’s Story” was posted to YouTube in 2009. It is the story of a young boy who suffered a critically traumatic brain injury, and his miraculous recovery through the help of a loyal therapy dog. You will be moved to tears when you see this.
In the five-minute video, Caleb’s family explains how he was in a terrible car accident when he was six-years-old. He was left with numerous fractured bones, and a brain injury that left him almost completely immobile.
His family and doctors doubted if Caleb would ever recover, and what progress he did make was slow and nearly impossible to detect.
But then Caleb met Colonel, the therapy dog who would save his life.
With Colonel by his side, Caleb was able to push himself a little further through his recovery exercises each day. His family immediately noticed a chance in Caleb, from his physical efforts to his general awareness of the surrounding world.
Although this video is a few years old now, is still just as emotionally impactful and heartwarming to see—which is probably why it’s become popular again and shared online in recent days.
Now, six years after the video first went viral, Caleb’s father, Ben Howard, has responded to the comments and questions of well-wishers with an update.
“I am pleased to share that after 8 years and over a dozen horrific surgeries Caleb is doing great and is attending regular school now and achieving very good grades. He has been a great example of courage to his family and many others. We will never forget Colonel and his wonderful handler Susan.”
