You’ve probably heard Ed Sheeran’s song, Photograph, which has over 200 million views on Youtube and has helped cement the British musician into famous celebrity status. Now, Sheeran finds himself in the middle of a $20 million lawsuit over copyright infringement over Photograph.
The lawsuit was filed by Martin Harrington and Thomas Leonard, who accuse Sheeran of stealing the “essence” of their song, Amazing, which they wrote for the 2010 British X Factor winner, Matt Cardle.
“The similarities go beyond substantial,” the complaint notes, “which is itself sufficient to establish copyright infringement, and are in fact striking. The similarity of words, vocal style, vocal melody, melody and rhythm are clear indicators, among other things, that ‘Photograph’ copies ‘Amazing.'”
You may recognize the lawyer representing Harrington and Leonard as Richard Busch – the same layer who helped the Marvin Gaye family win a lawsuit against Robin Thicke and Pharell Williams for their song, Blurred Lines back in 2013.
All arguments aside, the two songs are definitely similar. Here they are for you to make your own decision.
