Larvae-Covered Berries, Tarantulas and Other Adventurous Fare Served at Explorers Club Dinner

What’s the most unusual thing you’ve ever consumed? As much as we like to think we’re cultured and experimental, when we hear about the fare served at events such as the Explorers Club Annual Dinner, we’re humbled and reminded that we’re not as adventurous as we like to think.

The Explorers Club promotes the scientific exploration of land, sea, air and space and recently held the annual dinner for the 110th time at the Waldorf Astoria in New York. The event took place on March 15th and was catered by chef Gene Rurka, who prepared various dishes featuring an array of unusual ingredients such as insects, wildlife, animal body parts and invasive species.

We’re talking about cooked cockroaches, tarantulas, scorpion-topped cupcakes, chocolate-dipped strawberries covered in larvae, and even goat penises and bull testicles.
