Two Russian firefighters picked a particularly inopportune time to snap a selfie. Ilya Bykov and Rostislav Krylov took a picture of themselves smiling and posing in front of a burning building that eventually burnt to the ground, killing 17 people and injuring 55 others, some of them police and other emergency workers.
The two officers face serious consequences for the controversial photo, including being disciplined and/or terminated. From Yahoo:
The fire broke out in Kazan, an area in central Russia, and spread from a coffee shop to an entire shopping center. After being called to the scene, Bykov and Krylov took the picture and uploaded it to VKontakte, Russia’s version of Facebook.
Authorities are still investigating the photo and the circumstances under which it was taken. According to a Regional Emergency Situations Department spokesperson, the men will certainly be fired and possibly criminally prosecuted if the selfie is found to have put any lives at risk.
“These two are not characteristic of those who work hard every day, tirelessly saving lives,” said the spokesperson.
