What would you do if you woke up to loud noises and found your mom being held with a gun to her head by a masked man?
That’s exactly what happened to 19-year-old Malachi Heisler Tuesday night. It was the calamity that made Heisler grab his gun before leaving his bedroom to see what was going on.
“I had about five to six seconds to make a decision,” said the teen, who worried the man would shoot his mother.”By the time I did recognize him, the decision was made.”
The intruder, he finally recognized, was none other than his own estranged father, John Heisler. And by the time he turned his gun on his son, he was dead.
John Heisler, 46, had broken into the home and smashed windows coming in. He was also dressed in full black tactical gear, including a ski mask and thigh holsters. This is why his son didn’t immediately recognize him.
Five months earlier Heisler’s mother, Jolene Andrews, had obtained a restraining order against his father after he broke into her house and got violent. Not only was he not allowed anywhere near the home, he was also prohibited from having any weapons due to a previous felony conviction. It turned out, however, that the gun he’d held to Andrews’ head was only a BB gun.
Authorities say that an investigation into the deadly home invasion remains ongoing but that the teen isn’t expected to face charges.
