A correspondent for NBC’s Today Show since 2009, Jenna Bush Hager, the daughter of former President George W. Bush, announced on the air this morning she is expecting her first child next spring.
Bush Hager, 31, married Henry Hager, the son of former Virginia Lt. Gov. John Hager back in May of 2008, during the last term of her father’s presidency.
“I’m nervous and so excited to say that Henry and I are pregnant—or I’m pregnant,” Bush Hager corrected, going on to add “We’re so excited. And I’m, you know, obviously nervous about it. I’m a first-time mom—but it’s something I’ve always wanted.”
Bush Hager’s husband walked on set with a bouquet of flowers for his wife, and they called up George W. Bush and Laura Bush to get the soon-to-be grandparent’s opinions on air (is it just me, or is the Today Show getting really desperate to squeeze every newsworthy piece they have to increase their ratings?)
George W. said he couldn’t care less if Jenna was having a baby, and her twin Barbara (named after his mother) has always been his favorite.
Just kidding, that’s not what he said. As expected, he’s super excited and looking forward to spoiling his first grandchild.
“I’m fired up! Looking forward to it,” the former president said, adding he could “barely contain the news when I found out, so now I can tell all my buddies.”
When Matt Lauer asked what kind of mother Bush Hager would be, her husband answered “amazing.”
Let’s hope this amazing-child-to be picks a career out of the political spotlight. Can you imagine having to remember a third Bush in presidency? As though politics isn’t confusing enough!
