Gay Pride 2014 Parades and Festivals Guide
The summer Gay Pride season is upon us. It’s a time of year when lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender people and their allies celebrate at parades and festivals across the globe — and it was initially held in the summer months to honor the Stonewall Riots, which took place on June 28, 1969.
That night, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in the Greenwich Village section of New York City. These raids were very common in the late 1960s, and would often involve police brutality, arrests, and closeted homosexuals having their pictures published in city newspapers. As a result, these outed homosexuals could lose their jobs, be kicked out of their homes, and rejected by their families. Some chose suicide rather than face the repercussions.
However, on that night in 1969, visitors to the Stonewall Inn fought back against police, and violent protests erupted in the streets, lasting for six days. The Stonewall Riots, as they came to be known, marked a major turning point in the modern gay civil rights movement in the United States and around the world.
