Man Fleeing Police Gets Distracted Petting Kittens, Gets Caught

Cats are always a fun distraction, but there’s a time and a place for playing with adorable kitties. When you’re fleeing from police is not the time.

A criminal didn’t know that however. Florida police say Daniel Pinedo Velapatino stole $6000 from a friend after a long night of taking illegal drugs together in a Boca Raton hotel room. Afterwards, he fled the scene and wound up crashing his Lexus into a police cruiser and started running on foot.

He nearly escaped police when he ducked through the sliding door into a Boca Raton resident’s home. That’s when things got a little unusual. The residence, Candace Noonan, said of the incident:

I said, ‘Excuse me, can I help you?’ He said, ‘Oh, I’m so sorry. Next door, I’m mowing the lawn. Do you mind if I have a glass of water?’

Thinking the man was a landscaper, Noonan went to get Velapatino a bottle of water. She returned to find him laying on the floor, playing with her cats.

“It was odd, very odd,” Noonan said. “He was stroking my cat. It almost looked like he either was on drugs or he was mentally handicapped.”

Noonan and her husband naturally grew suspicious and called the police. Velapatino again fled out the back door and the chase resumed. He eventually jumped into a canal where he was captured by a police boat.

Since his capture, he’s been charged with burglary to an occupied dwelling, possession of Xanax, Morphine, and Oxycodone, and multiple counts of grand theft.

And he would have gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for those meddling cats.
