When Salvador Martinez told his girlfriend that he wanted to BBQ one of her beloved dogs, she didn’t think much of it. She thought he was joking.
Unfortunately, he wasn’t.
Martinez ended up viciously killing Onyx, Mandy Malone’s nine-month-old Chihuahua-dachshund mix, by ramming a screwdriver into the dog’s heart. He then skinned him and buried unwanted parts of his body in their backyard, while saving other parts to eat for dinner–which were found marinating in the fridge.
His motive for slaughtering the family pet? The former drug trafficker admitted to killing Onyx because there wasn’t any food in the house. After finding a recipe online for dog meat, he thought he’d give it a try.
“What could possibly go through someone’s mind to do something that sick?” Malone told KOAT News. “Nobody knows what to think.”
There is no law in New Mexico that says it’s illegal to eat dogs, but officials determined that the manner in which Martinez killed Malone’s pet was criminal. He was charged with extreme cruelty to animals and later released on bond.
“It is extremely disturbing to know that someone would be that brutal with a family animal,” Torrance County Sheriff Heath White said.
