Since 2006, hundreds of celebrities and politicians have taken the food stamp challenge to show how hard it is for Americans to live on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.
Gwyneth Paltrow, however, is taking a lot of heat for her attitude towards the challenge as well as the food she bought and posted on her twitter account.
Mainly, Paltrow is being criticized for buying items that wouldn’t give the average person a week’s worth of calories.
The point of the challenge seems to be lost on Paltrow, who tweeted a picture of her $29 purchase (rice, beans, eggs, some leafy greens, and many, many limes). Is she trying to prove that you can eat healthfully in New York City of all places on food stamps?
Who can live on a diet of mostly limes?
From the looks of it, Paltrow probably does live off so few calories, but Time magazine got especially hot under the collar with Paltrow’s demonstration.
“It’s poverty tourism, plain and simple, and it needs to stop,” said Darlena Cunha, the writer bashing Paltrow.
