Stem cell research is pushing the boundaries of the possible.
With thousands of people in need of heart transplants each year, researchers are trying to grow new organs, ones that would enable transplants without the risk of rejection by the recipient’s immune system.
The process begins with a donor organ. First, they remove all the cells from a dead organ — one that doesn’t even have to be from a human — from there they take the protein scaffold left behind and repopulate it with stem cells matched up with the patient in need.
