Houston police Officer D. Herrejon was heartbroken last Thursday when his horse bucked him off and then ran into oncoming traffic. It all happened when a cement truck passed and startled Charlotte.
In her final moments, her officer held her head to his chest.
The photo of the duo has gone viral, revealing the bond that Herrejon felt with his partner of four years. The Animal Justice League posted a moving tribute to the officer, which has brought tears to eyes around the world.
The Houston Police Department also shared powerful words:
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Charlotte, an HPD Mounted Patrol horse, who died in the line of duty this morning in a motor vehicle accident. …
Charlotte came to HPD as an unstarted 2-year old Tennessee Walker from Oklahoma. She thrived in HPD Mounted Patrol’s barefoot and natural horsemanship programs. She passed her evaluation period with flying colors and was working the streets of Downtown Houston within a short time of being started under saddle. She loved her job and was always ready to go to work putting bad guys in jail or giving nuzzles to children. She served the citizens of Houston for 4 years.
She will be missed.
Several photos of charlotte have been shared over the past few days, including the following.
We wish officer Herrejon peace and healing in the days to come.
