Back in October we heard that John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, the adorable duo who sung their way into our hearts in the 1978 movie musical Grease, were reuniting for a holiday album entitled This Christmas. The album also features notable names like Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett and The Count Basie Orchestra, Cliff Richard and Kenny G. Sounds like good fun you and your parents might enjoy– you know, if you’re all between the ages of 35 and 60 (like some of us at FTK).
Today, the video for Travolta and ONJ’s first single, “I Think You Might Like It,” was released.
Oh, sweet Lord.
It follows Travolta flying to some unknown American town in his plane, landing, being reunited with ONJ, doing some two-stepping, then watching movies together in that totally platonic Doris Day /Rock Hudson kind of way. They do a slight nod to Grease at the end. Within all that, we see some soldiers coming home from duty and being greeted by family in A Very Brady Christmas kind of way, if it were shot on The Disney Channel in the 1980s. Random.
This marks the first time the duo has recorded music together in nearly 35 years, and “I Think You Might Like It” was said to be a sequel to their 1978 Grease smash hit “You’re The One That I Want.” The song was written by John Farrar, who penned both “You’re The One That I Want” and Newton-John’s famous love song from the film, “Hopelessly Devoted to You.”
GOD we wanted to like it. We love ONJ’s music– including her country tunes and lesser known songs– so we had lots of hope. We wanted it to be retro fun, sexy cute, and a little nostalgic. And it’s just… Ugh. It’s like watching your grandparents who don’t have sex anymore trying to be flirty and fun at a family reunion where no one gets along.
On the upside, you can always buy the album and ignore the video. All proceeds from This Christmas are going to the Jett Travolta Foundation, honoring Travolta’s late son, and the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Center.
