For comic book or Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans, yesterday was a big day.
Joss Whedon’s long-rumored Avengers TV spinoff, entitled S.H.I.E.L.D., was given the green light by ABC. For those who don’t know comics or didn’t see this summer’s Avengers film, S.H.I.E.L.D. is the shadowy government organization led by Nick Fury. In the movies he’s been played by Samuel L. Jackson, and there’s no word yet on who would play the character in the TV version. While it’s doubtful that Jackson would reprise the role, if the money’s right it could happen; film actors like Kiefer Sutherland have not only made the leap to TV, but found great success there as well.
As for other news about the potential series… well… there isn’t much. ABC has already ordered a pilot for the series, which will be penned by Whedon, as well as Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. According to Entertainment Weekly, Marvel would not disclose any further details.
