The blue whale is the largest animal on the planet.
It was once that a blue whale’s heart was the size of an automobile, and that it had an aorta large enough to swim through. But as you can see in the video above, that isn’t exactly the case.
“To our knowledge this is the first blue whale heart to be anatomically preserved for exhibit and study. People are always curious how big it is, and if it is the same as our heart, structurally,” Jacqueline Miller, from the Royal Ontario Museum, explains.
One thousand gallons of formaldehyde was needed to begin the preservation process.
The heart was removed from a dead blue whale that washed ashore in Canada after becoming trapped in ice.
