Entertainment Weekly confirmed that the “Lady Gaga American Horror Story” tweet was legit, and the Grammy winner will be a series regular in the fifth edition of the popular thriller series, expected to air this October according to Variety. Although nothing is known about Gaga’s role in the upcoming season, the appearance will mark her first starring acting role in a major production.
The surprising casting news comes in the wake of Gaga’s equally surprising stripped-down Sound of Music tribute at the Academy Awards. Taken together, the developments point towards a new direction in the singer’s career.
Now she’s taking an even more unexpected turn by joining the cast of a TV series albeit one that’s critically acclaimed and has plenty of theatrical elements that one could imagine appealing to the singer. Plus, like HBO’s star-drawing True Detective, FX’s horror series boasts a format that appeals to in-demand performers since stars can commit to only a single season and still have a starring role.
Gaga held down minor roles in other productions, including Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Kills. She’s also collaborated with AHS series creator Ryan Murphy in the past, having lent her songs to his musical television comedy Glee in 2010.
