Roommates can be difficult, but the appropriate response to an intolerable living partner is to simply stick it out and let your rage fester in silence.
No one told that to 33-year-old Dawn Sellers. The Clearwater, Fla. resident was arrested after lighting her roommate on fire after a particularly explosive argument.
The tipping point that sent Sellers over the edge? Her roommate Carlos Ortiz Jr., 42 threw out a leftover plate of spaghetti and meatballs that Sellers was apparently really looking forward to eating. Both roommates had — surprise, surprise — been drinking at the time.
That’s when Sellers snapped and pulled out the lighter.
“She was setting little objects on fire, then that turned into pouring nail polish remover all over him,” Ines Causevic, a witness and friend of Ortiz’s, told Bay News 9. “And then all of a sudden, the lighter sparked and he lit on fire.”
Causevic tore Ortiz’s shirt off and threw water on him in an attempt to put out the fire.
“When he got up, his face was like melting off, it was pink and sore,” said Causevic. “His lips were burning.”
Sellers fled the scene before police arrived, and was later arrested at a nearby home belonging to her stepfather. She was charged with aggravated battery.
Ortiz, who neighbors say is a friendly guy, only let Sellers move in after she was evicted; she evidently had prior arrests for assault and battery. Ortiz, meanwhile, is in critical condition at Tampa General Hospital.
