The original cast of The Love Boat – along with a bunch of former guest stars – gathered in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, on Wednesday to help christen a new line of Princess Cruise ships. The above video details the event, but here’s a photo of the assembled stars.
The event included the drama’s original stars: Gavin Macleod (Capt. Merrill Stubing), Lauren Tewes (Cruise Director Julie McCoy), Fred Grandy (Purser Gopher Smith), Bernie Kopell (Dr. Adam Bricker), Jill Whelan (Vicki Stubing), and Ted Lange (Bartender Isaac Washington).
The Love Boat first hit the airwaves in 1977, and Princess Cruises agreed to have their cruise ships featured on the show. The ship that starred in almost every episode was the Pacific Princess, though it was sometimes replaced with sister ship Island Princess, but that was only when the Pacific Princess was in the shop.
By 1981, The Love Boat was a massive TV sensation, reaching #5 in the ratings. To capitalize on the attention, Princess Cruises dubbed the Pacific Princess “The Love Boat” and began featuring the ship in the company’s advertising. But times and tastes change, and The Love Boat left the airwaves in 1987. The Pacific Princess kept sailing until 2002. (We’ll ignore that there was a second Love Boat series — which failed — years later.)
