Doctors had to think on their feet when a man in Canton, Ohio came in after impaling himself on a shovel.
An upcoming episode of “Untold Stories of the E.R.” discusses the tense moments when doctors examined the man’s injuries, after he slipped off from a roof he was trying to fix and found himself skewered on the gardening tool.
Dr. Kevin Klauer, the E.R. doctor remembers the shock. “You can see the shovel sticking out of what appears to be the rectal area” adding “Even when you’ve seen a lot of bad injuries, this is really a cringe moment.”
Once they turned the man over to see the full extent of his injuries, they realized the shovel was actually impaled in the an area called the perineum, described as the patch of skin between the rectal area and the scrotum.
This turned out to be an even bigger challenge, as Klauer explains thinking, “He could bleed to death with seconds or minutes if there are injuries to the liver, kidneys or other organs that use a lot of blood vessels.
After ordering a CAT scan, the tool was removed and the patient – who had understandably been screaming so loud that it filled the whole hospital – eventually recovered.
Klauer admits doctors aren’t ever trained to work on someone with a shovel impaled, but that the team work and quick thinking saved the man’s life.
