Meet Jamie Brewer, the First Model with Down Syndrome to Walk in New York Fashion Week

Jamie Brewer, an American actress best known for her role in the show American Horror Story just made history by being the first model with Down syndrome to walk in New York Fashion Week.

The 30-year-old  wore an original design by Carrie Hammer, as part of the designer’s Role Models Not Runway Models campaign, which represents the real women who purchase her clothes.

Brewer spoke about her experience and what it means to her to be part of the show.

“Young girls and even young women … [see me] and say, ‘Hey, if she can do it, so can I,’” she told Today. “It’s a true inspiration being a role model for any young women to [encourage them] in being who they are, and showing who they are.”jamie brewer

As for the dress, Hammer used the “dark, scary, bewitching” nature of the actresses’ show as inspiration, putting her in a black knee-length dress cinched at the waist with a black belt.

“Jamie has a beautiful body with a teeny waist and curves, and we went with an A-line,” she said.
