Tess Christian is a 50-year-old woman who has one of the most unusual methods of preventing wrinkles from forming on her face: she never smiles.
For four decades now, Christian hasn’t smiled. Bored Panda explains she was 10 when her smile went away, but it wasn’t because of some traumatic life event that sucked her ability to be happy – instead, she just didn’t want show any happiness anymore.
“It’s not as if I’m miserable” she explains “I love life. I just don’t feel the need to show it by walking around with a rictus grin on my face.”
She also described how her reaction to her daughter being born was different than what many people would expect from a new mom.
“After Stevie’s birth I was overwhelmed with joy” she says. “But [I] still didn’t feel the need to smile.”
She credits not smiling with helping her to maintain a youthful look.
“My strategy is more natural than Botox and more effective than any expensive beauty cream or facial” she said.
And while it sounds like a totally bizarre way to keep the lines at bay, we can’t really argue with the results. At 50, Christian has no visible signs of laugh lines around her mouth.
“My friends have nicknamed me Mona Lisa, after the da Vinci painting. Mona Lisa was said to have been quietly amused, as am I. I just won’t show it.”
