A step-by-step guide to create a classic menswear look for women, from the ultimate magazine of shopping and style, Lucky.
1. MENSWEAR BLAZER
A cropped one-button closure blazer in a bright color won’t have anyone mistaking you for a boy! The trick to making this feminine is the fit–it should be snug enough to fit your curves and can remain unbuttoned or open while still looking totally put together.
2. STRIPED SHIRT
Buttoned up to the neck and perfectly tailored right down to the cuffs–this look should say “business-like” and “professional.” If your blazer is light, consider a darker shirt for contrast.
Whether you choose slacks or jeans, the look should be slim. Tapered down the leg and ending right above the ankle. Skinny jeans cuffed above the ankle say you didn’t try too hard, and managed to rock it anyway! Pair it with a skinny belt to make it even more chic.
4. STATEMENT JEWELRY
Think one or two pieces of big jewelry, like a men’s watch with a large faceplate, a large ring on your middle or index finger, or some bright bangles. Choose studs for earrings, and skip the necklace, or go for a barely-there thin chain.
They should be flats, and keep the look classic—oxfords, penny loafers, or leather ankle boots sans fancy embellishments (except maybe tassels!). The look should say relaxed and oh-so-dignified!
6. BRIEFCASE OR BAG
Your bag, like your jewelry, should make a statement. Whether you go for a briefcase or large satchel it should look sophisticated and collegiate-like.
To make this look unique to you, feel free to add an silk scarf and tie it ascot-like, a menswear hat like a fedora, or a pair of “geek” frames (even if you don’t wear glasses!) Be sure to add only ONE of these looks at a time, not all three at once. Too overdone!
