People enjoy making fun of Miley Cyrus. From her Disney roots to her family history and fashion foibles, the girl seems to bear the brunt of much teasing. But one thing you can’t argue about is her singing– and I say this without owning any of her music or being a fan of her work. These days, young “singers” are actually performers, and when the backing track and auto-tune gets shut down you can tell that they’re basically pretty faces with some dance moves. Not Miley.
This summer Miley brought her band together to perform some of her favorite songs in a series of “Backyard Sessions,” as they’re call. They feature Jamie Arentzen and Jaco Curaco on guitar, Paul Hager who was the sound engineer, and the sessions were filmed and edited by Kevin and Rebecca Joelso.
In her latest backyard acoustic session, which premiered exclusively on E! Online courtesy of MileyCyrus.com, the 19-year-old sings an impassioned cover of Melanie Safka’s “Look What They’ve Done to My Song.” She’s simply accompanied by the two guitarists, and delivers quite a soulful performance. Yes, that is the description written on the YouTube page about this video, but it’s not incorrect. The young singer really kind of nails it.
