A bit of background info for this story: There’s been a trend on social media sites over the last year where teens record themselves as they light themselves on fire. It’s called the “fire challenge,” and until now, it’s been easy to blame it on crazy kids who somehow don’t know better.
In one case however, an adult was involved — not just any adult in fact, but the teen’s mother.
Janie Lachelle Talley of Charlotte, North Carolina has been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor for helping her 16 year-old son set himself on fire.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police detailed the incident, saying the son poured fingernail polish over himself and lit himself on fire on July 29. Talley was reportedly present at the time, helping with the video recording. Apparently she saw nothing wrong with what her son was doing.
Even after he set himself on fire, it took others who were on the scene to help put the fire out. The teen suffered minor burns on his neck and chest.
Someone notified the Department of Social Services, and the police investigated the incident. It’s unclear how the trial will go or if Talley has yet to obtain an attorney.
